Norwood building committee: Coakley Middle School construction nears completion, commissioning set

NORWOOD, Mass. — At its Nov. 10 meeting, the Town of Norwood Middle School Building Committee heard a construction progress report for the new Coakley Middle School and was told the project is approaching final commissioning.
Luke, the project representative for the construction team, summarized several recent milestones: guardrail and granite curbing were added along the back of the access road; athletic-netting posts are installed and the netting remains to be hung; the Washington Street entrance and an outdoor classroom received asphalt surfacing; and line striping remains weather-dependent. "As of today, we've turned that back over and are asking the school to use it normally," Luke said about Elevator 2, which he said had experienced earlier service interruptions but has since been tested with no issues.
The committee heard that some warranty and commissioning items have been addressed in the past weeks. Electricians replaced certain GFCI breakers to reduce nuisance trips on residential appliances, a piping change reduced the morning cold-water faucet temperature and is being monitored, and a third-floor cold well in the kitchen was reset and has not shown further problems. Luke said staff training and occupant orientation will continue while the remaining punch-list items are closed.
On schedule, Luke said final commissioning of the heating system is targeted for the two weeks before Thanksgiving, landscaping and site improvements should be complete by the end of the month, and WT Rich’s contract demobilization is planned for December. He also noted a 10-month commissioning walkthrough next June and a targeted MSBA audit and final submission in July 2026.
Committee members asked operational questions about access and parking; Luke said a paved extension used for mobilization was striped mid-last week and will be inspected and opened to school use in the coming weeks. The presenter reported that WT Rich work was about 97% complete through October.
The building committee did not take separate action on these construction updates; they were given for informational and tracking purposes.
