Students from Southside Elementary presented the new 'Southside Classifieds' career-readiness program to the Dinwiddie County School Board.
Teacher and presenter Miss Culbreth introduced the program, which was developed by counselors Miss Bazemore and Miss Star Hargrove. Students described the application and interview process they completed to earn classroom jobs and the program's incentives.
"My name is Aiden Carlson, and I work as an IT helper," one student said. Other students explained roles including safety patrol, flag raisers, mail monitors, book-vending helpers and food-program assistants. Students earn 'B Bucks' as a token reward to spend at a school store and must maintain attendance and behavior standards to keep their positions.
Board members praised the presentations: one member called the student segment "the best part of our school board meetings" and several commended the counselors and teachers for creating hands-on learning opportunities. The board released the students and guests to take photos after the presentation.
The presentation required no formal board action but was acknowledged as a highlight of the evening's meeting.
