Susan Hawes was elected chair of the Bangor City Council after the council’s organizational meeting, the council announced following a roll-call vote.
The meeting opened with a Pledge of Allegiance and the city clerk swore in newly elected councilors. The clerk then called for nominations for council chair; Councilor (unnamed) nominated Hawes and Councilor Leonard nominated Michael Beck.
After nominations were closed by motion, the council voted to take the chair election immediately. Hawes and Beck each gave statements of qualifications before the vote. Hawes emphasized experience and a steady approach, saying she would “be transparent, civil, act in dignity and respect with professionalism.” Beck highlighted his project-management background and knowledge of Robert’s Rules and said, “If given the opportunity to be chair, I will not disappoint.”
When the clerk announced the tally, Hawes had six votes to Beck’s three. The clerk declared Hawes the council chair. Hawes thanked colleagues and, in remarks after her selection, stressed the need for fiscal responsibility, greater transparency and civility: “We must be fiscally responsible and have a clear vision where we’re gonna go.”
The meeting concluded when Chair Hawes adjourned at 10:20 a.m.
Authorities referenced during the meeting included the Bangor City Charter, which councilors swore to uphold when taking their oaths of office.
