The Woodhaven‑Brownstown School District used its Nov. 11 meeting to showcase Unified Sports, recognize substitute teachers and review fall athletics results.
Substitute recognition: In advance of National Substitute Teacher Appreciation Day (Nov. 21), the board recognized substitute teachers for their contributions to continuity of learning. Kim Hart, a longtime building substitute, was presented a letter and a $50 gift card.
Unified Sports and festival: Charlie Houle, serving as a Unified coach in place of the coordinator, described inclusion programs that pair students with and without intellectual disabilities in bowling, basketball, track and field, fitness and a spirit squad. John Drumm detailed a Unified Fall Festival, a ‘‘touch a truck’’ event designed to familiarize students with emergency vehicles to reduce stress during emergencies, and noted cross‑district collaboration among neighboring districts. Drumm said the bowling team had 25 students (18 athletes and 7 partners) and that a community event drew roughly 100 attendees; he also thanked community partners and volunteers.
Athletics recap: Jared Nichols, middle school athletic director, reported 198 student participants in middle school fall sports and highlighted undefeated seasons and regional qualifiers. Chris Nagel, athletic director for Woodhaven High School, reported 368 fall participants districtwide (228 boys, 140 girls), summarized team records and individual postseason recognitions, and cited team GPAs and survey results on student experience.
Board members congratulated coaches, athletes and volunteers and encouraged community attendance at upcoming events, including a Unified Warriors basketball game scheduled for Feb. 5.
