Students recognized for anti‑litter posters; parish updates Loranger library timeline

Tangipahoa Parish leaders recognized Roxy’s Toolbox poster winners from Courtney Christian School, Roseland, Hammond and Mata de la Rosa during the Nov. 10 council meeting and used the presentation to emphasize litter‑abatement education across parish schools.

Parish President Ray Miller described Roxy’s Toolbox as an established program that has been brought into schools for multiple years and estimated that the effort reaches roughly 250 to 400 students each year. "We're really excited that every year she trains 250 to 400 kids every year," Miller said, praising the students’ posters and asking the public to support litter prevention efforts.

Miller also noted that the parish spends "a little over $2.5 million" on litter abatement, blighted‑property remediation and animal control combined; he framed the school program as one preventive effort that may reduce those costs over time.

Separately, library staff provided an update on the Loranger branch. Barry (library staff) said the contractor expects the building shell to be finished in December and estimated the community room and finishing work would be complete by March or April of the following year. The new facility was described as about 7,000 square feet — roughly four times the size of the current La Rondeur branch — and will include expanded children’s and teen areas and a community room available to the public.
