Lewis Elementary highlights attendance push, SEL programs and Girls on the Run participation

Dr. Comstock updated the board on Lewis Elementary’s first-round STAR reading and math data and said the building’s attendance goal is to have 90% of students attending 90% of the time. She described interventions that targeted students showing low growth and noted that early interventions met targeted goals in the first round.
Comstock described building culture work — selecting 'grit' and 'joy' as focus words, a Tiger Connections team that runs themed events, a student leadership team and 'buddy classrooms' to strengthen connections. She reported 30 positive office referrals used to recognize academic and social-emotional successes.
Coaches of Girls on the Run, including Mikayla Brook, described the program as "a fun evidence-based program that inspires girl empowerment," with 13 participants this season. Student Jasmine Traver and others spoke about social-emotional lessons, team-building, and completing a 5K the prior Sunday.
Board members asked about sharing best classroom practices (Tiger Walks and demonstration classrooms) and mentoring new teachers. Comstock and other administrators emphasized peer observation, coaching and targeted professional development as tools to spread successful practices.
