The Eastpointe City Council issued a proclamation on Nov. 10 recognizing "Maggie's Butterfly Garden" in memory of Margaret N. Smith, who died March 5, 2024, at age 87. The proclamation noted Smith's service on the Beautification Commission (2004–2010), the Eastpointe Housing Authority (2009–2017), and volunteer work with the Humane Society, Kiwanis and local churches.
Council members and Beautification Commission members, including Chelsea Head and commission chair Craig Wedecki, attended the presentation. "Maggie's Butterfly Garden is hereby recognized for Margaret's many years of dedicated public service on Eastpointe's Beautification Commission and many other public services," the proclamation reads in part.
Council thanked families and volunteers who helped create the memorial garden and extended condolences to Smith's family. Administration and commission members said the garden and plaque are intended to be a lasting tribute in the community.
