The Selma City Downtown advisory board reviewed and endorsed promotion plans for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29 and provided direction on vendor recruitment, raffle logistics and marketing.
Jose said staff is coordinating a collective marketing campaign that encourages downtown businesses to stay open and offer discounts (10–30%). A craft-fair vendor area is proposed for the Robertson Garrett parking lot; vendor applications are open and are being promoted on social media. Several board members volunteered raffle baskets and offered to staff a table; Jose asked board volunteers to help manage the raffle between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Members discussed outreach to food businesses (including Antonio's, Rodolfo's, Golden Dragon and Foster Freeze) and asked staff to prioritize contacting those who could provide samples or on-site offerings. Jose said he had begun the permit process to close a parking lot for the vendor area and would coordinate with Jeremiah on permit finalization.
The board also discussed Grinchmas, planned for Dec. 13 on High Street with street closure, ornament decorating and photos with the Grinch. Jose said he had a vocal-performer quote of about $150 per hour and will return with a formal quote at the board's next meeting (Dec. 8). Multiple members urged including low-cost local performers and checking with the city attorney about agenda and posting requirements for booking decisions.
The board did not take any action to award contracts at the meeting; members asked staff to return with written quotes and permit confirmations for approval at a future meeting.
