Historic Preservation Commission wins $20,000 state grant, hires Northwest Vernacular; November meeting canceled

The Oak Harbor Historic Preservation Commission announced on Sept. 25 that it has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation and has selected Northwest Vernacular to perform the project work.
Senior Planner Ray Lindenberg told commission members the state agency approved the $20,000 request following the presentation the commission submitted at an earlier meeting. "We were granted our grant," Lindenberg said, adding that Northwest Vernacular — with contacts Spencer and Katie — had been selected after interviews and that he would provide the firm's website (nwvhp.com) and contact information to members.
Lindenberg said some grant funding timelines are delayed and the work will begin later than originally planned. He said he will meet with grants administrator Wendy Horn and Northwest Vernacular to finalize contract terms and next steps. "We'll be starting a little bit later than we had," Lindenberg said, and he added there is time built into the process so he does not expect the schedule to prevent completion.
A commissioner asked how many grant applications there were and how many winners were selected; Lindenberg said he did not have that information on hand but "I can find that out probably pretty easily" and offered to report back.
Commissioner Nick Hamden praised the earlier grant presentation, saying it clearly worked and noting he had submitted an applause reaction in the meeting chat.
Procedural votes at the meeting included approval of minutes from May 22, 2025 and July 24, 2025 by voice vote; the commission also voted to cancel its Nov. 13, 2025 meeting because of the Thanksgiving holiday and to hold the next meeting on Jan. 22, 2026. The meeting adjourned by motion and voice vote.
The commission said Northwest Vernacular may present to the commission in January or provide a virtual presentation; Lindenberg said members will receive updates at the commission's regular every-other-month meetings and via email as contracting progresses.
