The Waunakee Community School District board voted to advance design work for a package of high‑school projects after district staff and EUA architects presented conservative, conceptual cost estimates and scopes.
Presenters outlined a bundled scope including site‑safety improvements (asphalt, curb, sidewalks, card‑reader gates), building security upgrades (clock, bell, PA), demonstration classrooms, cafeteria furniture, a press box, softball field improvements and a proposed inclement‑weather/team room. The total conceptual estimate shown was approximately $2,556,000; presenters also noted $1,320,000 of previously tracked referendum high‑school work that remains uncompleted and could be reallocated if the board chooses.
Jay (EUA) said the estimates include 10% contingency and modest escalation to account for conceptual planning. Robin (EUA) described options for a “team center” or inclement‑weather facility, noting a less expensive open shelter design would be possible if tornado‑rated construction is not required. The board discussed capacity and siting tradeoffs, whether donors previously raised funds for a team center could be reengaged, and whether fundraising or reallocated maintenance dollars could contribute.
Steve (district staff) said the board reduced the property tax levy earlier and will need to identify funding sources if the projects proceed; he suggested the budget committee sketch allocation scenarios and said IRS reimbursement for the middle school project could arrive in early–mid 2027 and might be available to help fund work. Trustees directed both the budget committee and facility committee to meet before the December board meeting to refine funding and recommended timing.
After discussion, a board member moved to proceed with the list as presented for further scoping and design work; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff said detailed bids and final business decisions would return to the board in early spring.
