Ferndale — The Ferndale City Council on Nov. 10 approved a purchase of a Braun Type 1 ambulance for $391,788 and accepted a staff plan to resell an older vehicle to help offset the purchase cost.
Fire Chief Robinson described the city’s current ambulance fleet (2014, 2019 and 2025 models), the department’s replacement policy tied to NFPA guidance and the operational need for ambulances to fit both of the city’s stations. He said the city has a rare opportunity to assume an in‑process Braun order, which would reduce delivery to about one year (estimated October 2026) compared with a three‑year new‑order build time.
The chief highlighted Braun safety features — a sliding side door for safer roadway egress and reflective striping — and interoperability improvements (standardized cots and equipment) that make mutual‑aid cooperation with neighboring departments easier. He estimated resale value for the 2019 Horton unit at roughly $54,900 based on current market comps.
Chief Robinson said the city will pursue a $200,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) request and expects to defer payment until the unit is received. Council asked detailed questions about equipment compatibility and build‑out costs; staff said the quoted price covers full build‑out, lighting, wiring and graphics, and that transferable equipment (like power load systems) would be moved to the new unit prior to sale.
The motion to approve the purchase passed by roll call. The city manager and councilmembers commended the chief for identifying the expedited purchase opportunity and for standardizing fleet equipment to increase longevity.
