Alderman Berg and city staff updated the board Monday on a fuel spill at the municipal airport that occurred two weeks earlier. Staff reported the emergency cleanup team (OES) has accounted for approximately 95–98% of the spilled fuel and will remove emergency equipment this week, moving the site into corrective action.
City staff said the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) was pleased with the response to date and will conduct a follow-up after the end of the year. The city is exploring funding to upgrade equipment and infrastructure to reduce the likelihood of future on-property releases. Staff credited Codes Director Nick Kimbrough and EMA/OES for their response.
Alderman Berg thanked the crews and emphasized that, "This has been a big incident that could have been worse, and luckily, it hasn't." The board asked staff to continue pursuing funding and provide updates on corrective-action timelines and any TDEC recommendations.
Next steps: staff will report back on TDEC findings after the agency follow-up and on potential funding sources for airport upgrades.
