The Saucon Valley School Board approved first‑reading changes to Policy 231 (social events and class trips) that add an administrative regulation aimed at consistent expectations for school‑sponsored events district‑wide.
Administration said the AR was created to ensure consistent rules, communication in handbooks and expectations of administrators across K–12 after issues at a recent homecoming dance. The proposed AR sets a default approach of online ticketing for athletic events and performances to improve efficiency and accounting, but it also includes provisions for alternate purchase methods to accommodate families without online access.
Mr. Johnson (athletics/activities) told the board online ticketing improves accountability and saves staff time: "When the Colonial League sends something out for the games, you purchase tickets online...there's an accountability piece, there's a safety piece and efficiency piece." Board members raised concerns about convenience fees tied to third‑party platforms and equity for families without credit cards. An administrator proposed bringing a financial estimate of district costs if the district chose to absorb online processing fees, for review by the finance committee.
The board also clarified that building administrators approving an event will be responsible for attending and overseeing it — language meant to remove ambiguity about who is ultimately accountable for supervision and safety at events.
The first reading passed after discussion. Administrators will bring any adjustments about fee structures back to the finance committee for further consideration.
