Nesy López, assistant city secretary for the City of Tracy, announced that the city is beginning a transition from at-large council elections to district-based elections for city council members, with changes scheduled to start in November 2026 if the measure is approved. "La ciudad de Tracy está comenzando la transición de elecciones generales a elecciones por distrito para miembros del consejo," López said.
The move would change how council members are elected while keeping the mayor as an at-large, citywide position elected every two years, López said. "El alcalde continuará siendo una posición elegida de manera general en toda la ciudad cada 2 años," she added. City officials framed the change as a way to ensure local representation aligns with neighborhoods and distinct communities.
The city invited residents to participate in drawing proposed district lines, emphasizing that maps should respect neighborhoods, local history and geographic features. López outlined participation options: attend public hearings, offer opinions on which communities should remain intact, and submit draft maps for consideration.
City staff set a deadline for map submissions of Nov. 25, 2025, at 6 p.m.; maps submitted by that date will be eligible to be reviewed at a public hearing on Dec. 11, 2025. The announcement directed residents to the City of Tracy website and to the districting email for more information and to submit maps. López closed the message by appealing for community collaboration: "Juntos vamos a formar el futuro de Tracy."
Next steps: the city will collect community-drawn maps and public comment through the stated deadlines and hold the Dec. 11, 2025 public hearing. Any formal adoption or ordinance required to enact district elections was not specified in the announcement.
