The commission voted to direct the city manager to move forward with design and procurement for the Palmetto Street Sports Complex using a $1 million FY26 allocation. The authorized scope includes resurfacing the tennis courts, constructing new pickleball courts and providing associated parking, and explicitly does not include funding to resurface or refurbish the shuffleboard courts on the property proposed for transfer to Forward Paths.
Commission debate was vigorous. Supporters cited recreation-board feedback and demand for pickleball; opponents argued the shuffleboard club (a small membership reported in the transcript) lost access to local courts and should receive some of the funds. Public commenter Josh Brewster said he was unaware of the shuffleboard facility before neighbors raised the issue and expressed support for adding pickleball.
After discussion the commission approved the motion on a roll call vote, directing staff to procure an engineer to design the complex and return with details as the project moves into design.
Next steps: staff will issue procurement documents for engineering and design and return with detailed scope, cost estimates and a construction timeline.
