Meeting roundup: board approves consent agenda, buys used bus and moves into executive session

The Bennington Public Schools Board of Education on Monday conducted routine business, approving the consent agenda, authorizing a used bus purchase and hearing a spotlight presentation from the district's athletic trainers before moving into an executive session.

Consent agenda: the board approved the consent agenda, which included the Oct. 13 minutes, November bills (including a $27,351 track repair) and personnel reports. The motion was moved by the Board President and seconded by Tim; roll call was unanimous.

Bus purchase: the board approved purchase of a used bus from TrimCenters for $99,850 to replace a 2002 vehicle. Board materials said the buses available are typically 1'2 years old with 15,000'20,000 miles and represent an off-lease buying practice the district uses. The motion passed by unanimous roll call.

Athletic trainers: trainers Liz Palmer and colleagues gave a spotlight presentation on athletic safety, describing sideline concussion screening using the Sway app, VOMS vision testing, return-to-learn/return-to-play protocols, heat-safety monitoring with a wet-bulb globe thermometer and annual training with Bennington Fire and Rescue for spinal/helmet removal. Trainers emphasized in-house evaluations and daily monitoring that streamline care and specialist access through a partnership with "Children's." "We are able to keep these kids active...which helps them," one trainer said.

Executive session: the board voted unanimously to enter a closed session to discuss completed staff negotiations; the chair noted no action was expected afterward. The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Dec. 8 at 6:00 p.m.
