The Fairhope City Council on Nov. 10 approved a resolution awarding Phase 1 of the Pecan Avenue Watershed drainage improvement project to Chris Brewer Contracting for $545,810 and authorized a transfer of funds from Phase 2 into Phase 1 so construction can begin.
City Engineer Richard Johnson described the scope: replacement of failing outfalls near the Pecan Avenue Pier, rerouting drainage through a new bulkhead south of the boat ramp, a new bathroom as part of the site work, and a subsequent beach restoration project funded through the appropriate coastal grant program (advertisement and bid opening expected early next year). Johnson said the drainage work was prioritized to allow beach‑nourishment contractors to stage shortly after.
Council approved the resolution. During public comment, a Pecan Avenue resident thanked the city, saying yards and some dwellings had flooded during heavy rains and that the neighborhood was relieved to see a permanent solution beginning.
Next steps: contract execution and construction scheduling for Phase 1, with Phase 2 design and funding to be addressed in a later council action.
