Students, Eagle Scout and staff spotlighted at Caldwell-West board meeting

Student leaders from Grover Cleveland Middle School presented a month of student activities to the Caldwell-West Board of Education on Nov. 10, recounting spirit week events, an ultimate football tournament, a Jack-o'lantern contest and an in-school Veterans Day assembly that brought back alumni veterans to speak. Students noted the band, chorus and orchestra accompanied the assembly.
Avery Pulisci and Avery Durkin, serving as student representatives for the school's House of Knowledge and House of Respect, reported house-point totals: Courage 619, Citizenship 567 and Responsibility 397.
Eagle Scout Mitchell Courtright, a James Caldwell High School sophomore and member of Troop 6, described his Eagle Scout service project at Lincoln Elementary: a path roughly 100 feet long and 3 feet wide along the parking lot built with crushed rock, stone dust and about 50 stepping stones, finished with mulch and plantings. Mitchell said the project required extensive volunteer labor and fundraising: "It was about a hundred 50 hours over 2 days with 29 people working on it," and he added that he raised funds via GoFundMe. He credited Lincoln's principal, Mr. Geyer, and landscapers Mr. Mackin and Mr. Haas for assistance.
In personnel news, the board president announced Jasmine Okawala will start as Jefferson Elementary's new principal in January; the board plans a tribute to outgoing principal Mr. Ayers at the December meeting.
The board took no formal action on the student presentations or the Eagle Scout project; the items were presented for information and community recognition.
Next steps: the board will schedule a recognition and complete administrative paperwork for the Jefferson principal appointment prior to her January start date.
