Aransas County selects option 1 for precinct redraw, adopts three-digit precinct numbering

Summary
The commissioners chose Option 1 to redraw county voting precincts (reducing to seven voting precincts) to avoid immediate costs, and approved a new three-digit precinct numbering system to reduce voter confusion; staff estimated Option 2 could require opening additional polling locations and cost roughly $40,000 or more.
Aransas County Commissioners Court voted to instruct the county judge and elections administrator to communicate the court's preference for county voting-precinct redrawing as Option 1 and to adopt a three-digit precinct-numbering system.
"The county Republican Party strongly supports option number 1," Katie Jackson, county party chair, told the court, citing lower administrative burden and lower cost. County elections staff recommended the same course, and staff estimated the alternative (Option 2) could force opening another polling location and add about $40,000 or more in expenses to the county.
Under the adopted preference (Option 1), the county would move to a configuration of seven voting precincts. Commissioners emphasized that the redraw affects voting precinct boundaries used for administering elections, not the commissioner-district boundaries used for governance. Elections staff explained Aransas County operates a countywide polling-place program that allows voters to cast ballots at any location within the county.
The court also amended the motion to implement a three-digit numbering scheme for voting precincts, a proposal offered by Kim Hoesley (precinct chair). The system uses the first digit to indicate the commissioner precinct and the remaining digits for the voting precinct (for example, 101 and 102 would indicate two voting precincts inside Commissioner Precinct 1). Supporters said the scheme reduces confusion between commissioner-precinct labels and voting-precinct identifiers and provides flexibility for future subdivision of precincts.
The motion selecting Option 1 and the amendment to adopt three-digit numbering both passed on recorded votes by the commissioners present.
