Chandler asks staff to stand ready with relief options as federal shutdown affects residents

Council member Tessa Harris introduced a city relief measures item at the study session on Nov. 10, asking staff to prepare options to support residents affected by a federal government shutdown.

Harris said furloughed federal employees, contractors and residents at risk of eviction or utility disconnection were already feeling impacts and she wanted staff to have authority and tools to respond quickly during the holiday season. "We need to make sure that, the people of Chandler know that we're listening, we're hearing, and I wanted to give staff direction to look into options that can help support our residents during this time," Harris said.

Acting City Manager John Palmier and neighborhood-resources staff said food assistance is the most immediate need and that staff had already coordinated with community partners. Palmier said staff is ready to act and would monitor eviction rates, utility needs and food demand; he said programs and pipelines exist and staff would seek council approval to disburse funds quickly if conditions warrant.

Vice Mayor Ellis and other council members noted faith-based organizations and regional food-bank partners were already mobilized and urged staff to eliminate unnecessary red tape to speed relief.

Council provided direction for staff to monitor needs, prepare options for rapid response (including potential use of reserves and partnership distribution channels), and return with specifics if the situation worsened.
