Laurel Elementary highlights PBIS program and honors staff and principal

The Franklin County board paused its routine business Nov. 10 to recognize staff and showcase a student-support program at Laurel Elementary.
Terry Preston, custodian at Laurel Elementary School, was named support staff of the month; presenters noted Preston's seven months at LES, community volunteer work and daily contributions to building upkeep and student interactions. Andrew Meyer, principal at Laurel Elementary, was honored as educator of the month.
Meyer also presented Laurel's PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) initiative. He described the HIVE acronym (Honesty, Integrity, Value, Excel), a jacket-dollar reward economy and a tiered recognition system that will include a student-of-the-month program with yard signs to celebrate student achievement in the community. Meyer said PBIS reset days will occur after extended breaks to reinforce expectations and that the program aims to use consistent language across building spaces so staff and students share behavior expectations.
Board members praised the work and noted that such programs help create a positive school climate. The presentation and recognitions were followed by a brief photo opportunity and applause recorded in the meeting transcript.
