City staff informed the City Council that a referendum petition filed against Ordinance 4-48 had been verified as sufficient. The petition required 3,617 signatures; 5,232 signatures were delivered and verified by the county registrar.
"As we did with the last petition, we sent it off to the registrar of voters. They verified the signatures and they did confirm that we can move forward," staff reported. Council accepted the certificate of sufficiency by motion; staff will bring resolutions calling the election at the December meeting and advised the matter will appear on a June ballot if scheduled accordingly.
Council discussion touched on voter turnout and the time and cost to place the issue on the ballot. One councilmember suggested convening an ad hoc committee to revisit the underlying land-use plan to try to reach a compromise before an expensive election, noting the anticipated cost of more than $100,000 for a citywide special election campaign. Another councilmember emphasized that the referendum process is a democratic right and the measure should go to voters.
Next steps: Council accepted the certificate of sufficiency; resolutions to call the election will be presented in December and the election timeline was discussed for a potential June ballot.
