The City Council voted on Nov. 11 to adopt a memorandum of understanding with the Long Beach Lifeguard Association covering roughly 211 employees. City Human Resources staff said the agreement includes salary increases and a new education-pay incentive for lifeguards as a recruitment and retention measure.
Sarah Green presented the tentative agreement and described it as a targeted set of incentives designed to stabilize the seasonal lifeguard workforce given growing coastal safety demands. Council members praised the lifeguard workforce and noted heightened pressure on lifeguard operations because of changing weather patterns and increased storm-related beach hazards.
The motion to adopt the lifeguard MOU passed; staff will proceed with implementation and notify the workforce of the new pay provisions and retention incentives.
