West Windsor health nurse outlines outbreak-response steps, announces Nov. 13 vaccine clinic

At the Nov. 10 Board of Health portion of West Windsor's meeting, public health nurse Gitanjali Jain described the local health department's outbreak-identification and response process and announced upcoming vaccination opportunities.
Jain told the council the department receives outbreak reports through required institutional reporting (assisted living, schools, daycare, group homes), clinician or resident reports and state surveillance tools. "Any increase in disease above its usual rate in a defined population and time that meets the definition of an outbreak is investigated," she said, and outlined core response steps: identify at-risk populations, interview cases and facility staff, perform site inspections as needed, provide guidance and education, and coordinate daily with the state epidemiologist and CDC data systems. She said outbreaks are considered concluded when no new cases are reported for two incubation periods of the disease and an out-break closure report must be submitted within 30 days.
Jain also announced a COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon, in partnership with Wegmans Pharmacy and the Mercer County Division of Health; vaccines will be available for anyone 6 months and older, insured or uninsured. She said the department has been offering homebound vaccination visits and has completed seasonal flu clinics for residents and township employees.
During Q&A, council members asked how the department notifies exposed contacts (Jain described confidential sample letters to identified contacts, state-site broadcasts and individual phone calls) and confirmed that even a single case (for measles, specifically) prompts intense contact tracing. The nurse emphasized that communication, timely guidance and coordination with state subject-matter experts are key to limiting spread.
The council thanked the health department for the presentation; the BoH took no formal action on the report and moved on to a draft-code discussion later in the meeting.
