The Elk River School District board voted Nov. 10 to approve its 2026 legislative platform after amending one line to replace the word "ruling" with "finding." Board members debated timing and wording and agreed to add supporting narrative for legislators.
The Elk River School District Board of Education approved its 2026 legislative platform on Nov. 10 after adopting a last-minute amendment to change the term "ruling" to "finding" in a description of a federal action.
Chair Anderson brought the platform forward after the district hosted legislators earlier in the day to discuss a draft platform and priorities. Director Weiss said the board would supplement the one-page platform with additional narrative and impact numbers to help legislators in short meetings.
During discussion, Director Weiss and others objected to wording that described a Sept. 30 action as a "ruling," saying the document should instead reflect the district's reading that it was a finding of noncompliance. Director Weiss said the distinction mattered because "a ruling certainly has a different level of action than a statement, per se." The board moved to amend the platform wording; the amendment passed by voice vote and the board then approved the platform as amended.
Supporters said the concise platform would help district advocates communicate quickly during meetings with legislators. "When you set a one-page document down and you can hit the bullet points, sometimes that carries more weight than going through a packet later," Superintendent Olmos said, summarizing feedback received.
The board did not change the substantive priorities during the meeting; members agreed administrators would add narrative and impact figures to the platform packet to provide context for legislators. The platform will serve as the district's base advocacy document for the 2026 session.
