The Bridgeport School District board approved an annual $27,900 contract with Mission CIT, LLC to provide EMT certification training at Bridgeport Military Academy (BMA).
BMA staff described the program as a yearlong course run over two semesters in partnership with Mission CIT; roughly 12 students enroll each year and the presenter said the pass rate for certification is approximately 80 percent. The program is funded through BMA's School Improvement Grant (SIG), not general district funds, and includes contract coverage for an instructor and testing/certification costs.
The BMA presenter said the program has been offered for a decade and the school has used Mission CIT for the past three years. Board members asked about scale, costs and outcomes; the presenter said the $27,900 price increased $900 from the prior year and that one long-term goal is to certify a district staff member as an EMT instructor to reduce future contractor costs.
A motion to approve the agreement was made and seconded; the board recorded voice votes and the motion carried.
Administration noted the course provides career pathways for students, citing that newly certified EMTs in the region may earn starting salaries in the mid-$50,000s and that some alumni have joined local fire departments. District staff also discussed possible magnet-status planning and long-term staffing strategies to bring training in-house.
