Summary
A county vector‑control representative told the Fullerton City Council that 21 mosquito pools in Fullerton tested positive for West Nile virus this season and recommended residents eliminate standing water and take simple rodent controls.
Fullerton — The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control representative briefed the Fullerton City Council on Nov. 4 about recent vector activity in the area and practical precautions residents can take.
The presenter said Fullerton ranked third in the county by number of West Nile positive mosquito pools this year, reporting 21 positive pools, and described disease risks including encephalitis in rare human cases. The district urged residents to eliminate standing water, inspect yards for harborage and access points for rodents, and report suspect infestation sites to the county inspection team.
The presenter also described surveillance practices and emerging control tools, including a sterile insect technique program that releases sterilized male mosquitoes to reduce breeding. The district said it provides free site visits and that residents may call to request inspections for mosquitoes, rats, stinging ants and other public‑health pests.
Council and staff noted the seasonal decline in mosquito activity as temperatures cool but emphasized continued vigilance. The presentation concluded before public comments began.
