Board approves $320,000 in playground work at Maidu and Excelsior using grant and carryover funds

The board approved facilities staff's recommendation to replace the Maidu TK playground structure and to resurface the Excelsior playground. Facilities staff presented cost estimates and recommended funding sources.
Melissa (facilities staff) explained options and pricing: a proposed replacement play structure for Maidu was quoted around $130,000-$148,000 (the higher figure included additional elements); resurfacing at Excelsior was about $20,000. She said the district would use a mix of the TK implementation grant, ELOP carryover funds and part of the instructional materials grant to fully fund the recommended work. Facilities reported the new equipment should fit the current footprint and the district's DSA inspector indicated the project could proceed as like-for-like replacement, avoiding a separate DSA submittal.
PTC leaders at Maidu spoke in support of the projects and trustees emphasized prioritizing projects via an upcoming facilities master plan. Trustee discussion included timing and shade structures; trustees noted shade over playgrounds is costly and not included in the immediate recommendation. The board approved the recommendation and asked facilities staff to coordinate installation timing and site logistics.
