Sheriff seeks covered storage; county agrees to use rural facilities interest to close funding gap

Brad Thurman presented a proposal for a 60-by-100-foot storage building (with an additional lean-to) intended to consolidate evidence vehicle storage and high-value county vehicles under one roof. The low construction bid arrived at roughly $522,000; Thurman estimated that with city fees, stormwater and permitting the total would near $600,000.
Kathy Baxter, finance director, said the board had previously allocated $450,000 from capital projects and that the rural public facilities fund has earned interest that could be used to bridge the gap. "I had looked at the rural public facilities fund... after that, we have left about $300,000... I feel very comfortable that the interest earnings on this account could be utilized for this facility," Baxter said.
Commissioners discussed insulation and climate-controlled storage for evidence and noted that larger evidence (vehicles) will be stored inside while other climate-controlled items remain in the Hall of Justice. The board signaled support for moving forward using interest earnings to supplement the board'allocated capital funds.
What happens next: staff will proceed with contracting using the budgeted allocation plus interest earnings from the rural public facilities fund and return with final contracting paperwork.
