Cooke County Commissioners voted 3-2 on Nov. 12 to transfer a 2016 Tahoe previously used for jail transport to a constable for use as a spare vehicle.
The constable said the Tahoe has more than 180,000 miles (speaker estimated 180' 205,000) and would serve as a backup if take-home vehicles suffered major mechanical failures. "It is a spare, indeed, sitting at the office," the constable said while describing mileage and potential utility. Commissioners debated whether the Crown Victoria should remain the primary vehicle or be reassigned; concerns included fuel and maintenance budgets and the cost of outfitting the Tahoe for patrol duties.
After discussion about department needs and possible auction or retention of other county vehicles, the court approved the Tahoe transfer on a 3-2 vote. Several commissioners asked staff to return with a follow-up agenda item clarifying whether the Crown Victoria would remain assigned to the deputy, how the county will outfit the Tahoe, and what budget amendments are needed to support fuel and equipment.
The judge instructed staff to bring a future agenda item that will specify the Crown Victoria's status and required budget amendments.
