Bay County treasurer launches countywide food drive; officials preview Veterans Day events

Bay County Treasurer Weston Prince used the Nov. 4 Committee of the Whole meeting to announce a countywide food drive and asked county employees and residents to contribute.
Prince said county buildings and several county offices will host food-drop sites and that donors can give online via a QR code that links to the Bay Community Foundation; food collected will go to United Way distribution partners. "If half of us give $20, that's a pretty substantial dent we can make as the county," Prince said, urging staff participation and explaining drop-site locations across county facilities.
Commissioners also approved a proclamation recognizing November 2025 as Veterans Month and highlighted upcoming Veterans Day ceremonies: an 11 a.m. program outside the county building and a noon event at the USS Edson. The sheriff and other staff described a Mid Michigan Honor Flights program that transports eligible veterans to Washington, D.C.; staff provided the Honor Flights website for sign-ups.
The treasurer noted concerns about local food insecurity and recent federal SNAP pauses that have strained food pantries; commissioners asked logistical questions about QR-code payments and donation collection. The board approved the Veterans Month proclamation and proceeded to routine agenda items before adjourning.
What's next: Donation logistics and collection will be managed by county staff and partner organizations (Bay Community Foundation and United Way); veterans wishing to participate in Honor Flights were directed to sign up via the program website.
