Staff says 30-acre wetland near Bacons Bridge Road could be split for conservation

Staff said the interested party may split the property and preserve roughly 20 acres, but the county does not currently have capacity to develop the land as a park because of the complexity of the wetland structure. Staff recommended that the town of Somerville and interested land trusts be pursued as partners rather than county ownership.
The commission heard that the town of Somerville was not interested in taking the property as a park and that the county encouraged contact with land trusts so the prospective owners could apply for Greenbelt funds. No formal application has been submitted as of the meeting.
