Lake County Board proclaims Veterans Day, approves Operation Greenlight lighting at courthouse

Supervisor Rasmussen read the proclamation on behalf of the board, saying the document recognizes "the contributions and sacrifices of the men and women who served in the armed forces" and declares that the board will participate in Operation Greenlight to "let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported." The proclamation text references state and national veteran statistics and notes the document is signed by Chair EJ Crandall.
A representative of We Serve Veterans of Lake County, speaking for the United Veterans Council, thanked the board and said, "the 7,000 veterans who reside here in Lake County," emphasizing local veteran families and affiliate organizations. The proclamation text itself states Lake County is home to approximately 4,500 veterans or roughly 7% of the county population; the differing figures were voiced in the meeting but were not reconciled on the record.
Several community members spoke in support. One commenter said, "The veterans hold a dear spot in my heart. My father was a World War 2 veteran. My son served in Afghanistan," and thanked the board for the proclamation. Another attendee thanked the board for recognizing service members past and present.
On the motion to join Operation Greenlight and light the courthouse, a board member moved to approve and suggested that staff "take a picture and send it to NACO so that we can be a part of the nationwide movement for Operation Greenlight." The motion was seconded and carried 5–0.
The board did not attach further legislative or budgetary actions to the lighting; the approved action is participation in the nationwide Operation Greenlight awareness effort and the courthouse lighting for the Nov. 4–11, 2025 period. The board then moved on to the next item on the agenda.
