Sustainability report: county hazardous-waste drives exceed targets; solar array site work imminent

Becca, sustainability staff, told the committee the county's most recent hazardous-waste collection events are meeting contract expectations and expanding outreach. The Oct. 4 household hazardous-waste event yielded 73,934 pounds and the three-event series totaled just over 172,000 pounds, meeting the 150,000-pound threshold in the landfill agreement.
Becca said a Limestone Township electronics collection yielded 16,961 pounds and a Timber Township event earlier this month filled a box truck (estimated roughly 5,000 pounds). The events aim to reach underserved townships and the county will continue partnerships with township governments for broader coverage.
On Recycle Coach, Becca said data from user quizzes and search queries will let staff target education campaigns more effectively: "Now that people are using Recycle Coach, we can see what questions they're failing on the quiz...which items they're looking for disposal on." She also reported that planning and permitting are in place for highway construction related to a planned solar array and that equipment is on site.
Committee members requested a fuller update on the landfill and mine survey status at the next meeting; Becca agreed to coordinate that after the landfill committee meets.
No formal committee action was taken during the sustainability update.
