Columbia County introduces Jade, a new gun-detection K-9 for schools

The Columbia County School Board meeting on Oct. 28 included an introduction and brief demonstration of Jade, a new school resource K-9 trained for gun detection.
District and sheriff’s office staff introduced School Resource Deputy Kevin Bailey and his canine partner, Jade. Presenters said Jade is currently based at Columbia High School and will visit other schools so students can meet the dog. Sergeant Ball and Deputy Bailey described a short demonstration behind the meeting room using backpacks; organizers also invited attendees to view the fully fitted K-9 vehicle parked outside.
Sheriff Kitchens (speaking for the sheriff’s office) said the K-9 will be used throughout Columbia County schools to support safety and that the vehicle outside displays logos of the various district schools. Board members and the superintendent thanked the sheriff’s office, the deputy and the K-9 program for their support of school safety programs.
The board received the presentation as an informational item; the K-9 program’s operational details (training hours, vendors, procurement costs) were not specified in the presentation.
