Osborne students honored: Unified Champion distinction and VMEA senior honor choir selection

The Manassas City Public Schools Board opened its Oct. 28 meeting with student spotlights celebrating two statewide and national recognitions from Osborne High School.
Missus Radford introduced the Unified program’s award, saying it was a significant distinction: Osborne was one of only two new Virginia schools recognized and ‘‘I’m really, really proud of them,’’ she said. Two students, Mackenzie Fitterer and Maya Mira, described the program as student-led. "When we started this class our junior year, we fell in love with it," Maya Mira said. "This class has become easily one of our favorite classes here at Osborne."
The board also recognized Rubell C. Najjaro (appears in transcript as Rubell C. Najjaro) for being selected to the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) senior honor choir. Miss Shirley Glum, director of choral activities, said Najjaro auditioned in the fall, submitting a prepared German excerpt and completing advanced-level sight reading. Out of roughly 1,200 submissions, about 150 singers were chosen; Glum said Najjaro not only made the choir but "earned the third highest score among the tenor ones and also scored a perfect sight reading." Najjaro will rehearse and perform at the VMEA conference in Norfolk later in November.
Trustees asked staff to share these accomplishments widely and congratulated students and staff. The recognitions were presented with no board action required.
