Board reviews HVAC preventive-maintenance contract, tennis grant and facilities needs
Summary
The board considered a $53,993.84 preventive-maintenance HVAC contract with Hockenstein Mechanical, accepted a $32,000 USTA tennis-venue award for Gateway High courts, and discussed roof and kitchen-floor projects; members noted cost savings versus Trane and plans to move toward a nonproprietary automation system.

The district’s business manager presented business items that included several facilities and contract actions. Item 8.1 accepted a $32,000 USTA tennis-venue award to support Gateway High School tennis courts. Item 8.2 proposed an HVAC preventive-maintenance agreement with Hockenstein Mechanical for all district buildings from Nov. 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, at $53,993.84. Item 8.3 authorized filing 2024 real-estate tax liens totaling $21,680.
Staff explained the Hockenstein contract is a substantial savings compared with the Trane option — Trane’s proprietary systems can lock the district into single-vendor services — and that the Hockenstein agreement includes internal maintenance of chillers and parts the district cannot do internally. “That gives us more flexibility,” a board member said; staff added the preventive-maintenance contract covers automation and internal chiller maintenance while staff plan an eventual switch to a nonproprietary room-control system.
Facilities and grounds reported completed projects (a roof at ‘UP’), upcoming flooring work at Cleveland Stewart, and the need for a new roof at Cleveland Stewart in next year’s budget. The county health department flagged a kitchen floor at the middle school as needing recoating rather than paint; staff said bids are being sought for a properly coated surface.
These items were advanced for board action as part of the business section; board discussion focused on costs, vendor choice and scheduling for capital repairs.
