Gateway parent asks board to approve competitive cheer; item placed on next agenda

Erica, a parent of a Gateway High freshman, told the Gateway School District board she was representing the high school’s cheerleading team and asked the board to approve competitive cheer so the students could compete beyond sideline events. “Tonight we’re here to respectfully request your approval and or support in allowing our team to represent Gateway High School cheer and competitive cheerleading events,” she said.
Board members responded positively and instructed staff to place the competitive-cheer request on next week’s agenda so the board can consider it formally. A board member asked staff to follow up imminently; staff indicated Mister Hall would be in touch about next steps the following day or Wednesday.
Erica said the team is fundraising and currently is not asking for district funding, and that the program would offer year-round training, leadership development and broader school recognition. The board agreed to schedule a formal discussion and possible action at the next meeting.
The item will appear on the board agenda next week for a staff report and potential vote.
