District 128 presents updated student handbook, new course proposals and summer programs

District staff told the Program & Personnel committee on Nov. 3 that they completed a comprehensive review of the 2025 student handbook as part of a district website transition and will continue periodic updates to reflect evolving law and practice.
The administrator presenting the handbook said the update covers procedures, expectations and supports to encourage a safe, inclusive learning environment and that future updates will be summarized for the board rather than reissuing the full handbook each year.
On curriculum, staff shared course proposals intended to expand Advanced Placement and dual‑credit opportunities, to offer targeted classes for students with IEPs and to replicate successful courses across both Libertyville and Vernon Hills High Schools. New proposed summer courses include field restoration ecology (hands‑on environmental work) and dramatic literature; administrators said these courses are intended to expand options for incoming ninth graders and create enrichment opportunities not available during the regular year.
Administrators also presented two educational‑tour requests: a traditional team trip for the Libertyville High School girls gymnastics team to Camp Duncan and a new five‑day drama and literature trip to New York City led by LHS teacher Christopher Thomas. The drama tour is scheduled for the fourth week of summer 2026, includes master classes and Broadway shows, and staff estimated the cost per student at roughly $2,200–$2,400 depending on airfare and total enrollment; students who enroll in the related summer course will receive priority sign‑up for the trip.
Course additions and removals will be brought to the full board for votes at the November board meeting where required; the summer‑trip and tour requests were presented for committee review and informational discussion.
