The Newburgh Free Library committee reviewed a proposed pilot bike-lending program developed in partnership with the Department of Transportation's local mobility team. Presenter Ben Gawker said the pilot would begin with three bikes lent through participating libraries and is modeled on a successful program at the Nyack Library.
Gawker said liability waivers and legal review are in place and that maintenance would be handled by local bike shops the library is identifying. "So we're gonna start out with just 3 bikes to lend, see how that goes," he told the committee, adding the goal is to increase visible bike access and alternative transit options for patrons who may not be able to reach the library by bus or car.
Board members asked about program documentation and evidence of success at other systems; Gawker offered to forward news coverage of the Nyack program and described the pilot as intentionally small and iterative so staff can resolve procedures and liability questions before any expansion.
