McLean County panel approves 2026 motor fuel tax maintenance plan

The McLean County Land Use and Transportation Committee on Nov. 4 unanimously approved a 2026 motor fuel tax maintenance resolution that funds routine road materials and the county’s annual oil-and-chip program.
County engineer Jerry Stokes described the MFT program as the county’s primary source for materials such as paint, salt and year-to-year surface treatments. “This is our annual motor fuel tax program that we run, basically for buying materials such as paint and salt for the winter,” Stokes said, adding the program also supports the county’s oil-and-chip resurfacing work.
Stokes told the committee that the county is concentrating a portion of its MFT dollars on construction projects this year but will retain funding for smaller maintenance items: “It’s a little lower this year because we’re kind of concentrating some of our motor fuel tax dollars into more of the construction side, but we’ll still do some oil chip out of the MFT program and maybe use other funds on top of that as well.”
On a member question about salt pricing, Stokes said the county procured rock salt through the state bid process at $85 per ton, delivered. Member Reeves moved the resolution and Member Duffy seconded; the committee voted to approve the measure unanimously.
The committee did not set additional project-level spending from the MFT at the meeting. Next steps include routine administration of the program and incorporation of the MFT estimate into the county’s project planning for 2026.
