The Metropolitan Development Commission voted unanimously Nov. 5 to approve a five-year personal property tax abatement for Herff Jones LLC’s facility at 4501 West 62nd Street in Council District 6.
Kathy Battle of the economic incentives team told commissioners the company is consolidating Illinois manufacturing into the Indianapolis location with a $3,920,000 personal property investment. Staff reported the project is expected to retain about 245 jobs and create roughly 30 new positions. The company seeks a five-year personal property tax abatement; staff recommended approval.
Battle said the company intends to direct the 5% tax savings toward workforce and veteran training and that discussions with veteran-focused partners were ongoing. "Staff is recommending approval of resolution 2025 A042 for 5 years personal property tax abatement," Battle said.
Following the presentation and with no public comment, Commissioner Schumacher moved to approve, Commissioner West seconded and a roll-call vote recorded the resolution as passing 9-0.
The commission’s approval authorizes the Department of Metropolitan Development to finalize the economic revitalization area designation and move forward with the abatement as outlined in the resolution. Staff will monitor and report on compliance and any workforce commitments tied to the abatement.
