Smyrna coordinates I‑24 work, rolls out ITS and readies airport upgrades

Mayor Mary Esther Reed said the town is coordinating with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Greater Nashville Regional Council to ensure the I‑24 Choice Lane project and interchange improvements at Amityville Road and Sam Ridley Parkway reflect local priorities. "I think we all can agree that I‑24 congestion has to be addressed," Reed said.
The town is also implementing an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) intended to improve traffic flow, safety and provide real‑time travel data, Reed said, and staff have completed a long‑range major thoroughfare plan and a Safe Streets for All initiative that together identify priority roadway projects including Amable Road, Lee Road, Front Street, Weekley Lane and Industrial Boulevard.
At the Smyrna Rutherford County Airport, Reed said the town completed a $13,000,000 runway reconstruction last year and is preparing to replace the airport’s aging control tower and build new facilities to support the Tennessee National Guard’s relocation; she noted the airport supports more than 1,500 jobs and produces an estimated $230,000,000 in annual economic impact.
What’s next: Reed framed these efforts as part of an integrated approach to manage growth and improve safety, with ongoing coordination among town staff, TDOT and regional partners.
