Senior programs leaders told the commission both senior sites are operational and serving as cooling centers during the heat wave, and they outlined nutrition and activity programming for older residents.
Leticia Jackson, who oversees senior programs, and senior‑nutrition staff said the program served "over 59,000 meals" in the past fiscal year (as stated in the transcript). Staff clarified the meal program is funded in part through County of San Bernardino support for meal preparation; contributions are suggested for adults 60 and older and are optional. Staff emphasized that the program will not turn people away for inability to pay; guests younger than 60 who take meals are the ones who may be asked to pay a fee or suggested contribution.
Staff outlined upcoming senior initiatives: senior games registration opens Aug. 1 for people 50 and older, dollar dances (two per month), health and resource fairs and regular presentations on dementia, nutrition and aging. The department said it will continue to provide cooling centers and transportation for seniors where needed.
Next steps: staff will distribute program schedules and a vendor list to commissioners and will follow up on suggestions for articulation agreements with local colleges that would allow seniors to audit classes at reduced or no cost.
