Marge, clerk of courts, told the committee the per diem had last been increased in 1993 and that the office is now keeping jurors on-site and providing lunch rather than offering a separate $7 stipend. "The last time the per diems were increased was in, 1993," Marge said, arguing the change better compensates citizens summoned for jury duty in the current economy.
Mark Helwig made the motion to approve the updated resolution; Jim Evans seconded. Committee members discussed whether to set a fixed per-mile amount or tie reimbursement to the county's standard (the county rate is currently calculated as 80% of the federal rate and can change annually). One member said referencing the county rate avoids annual resolution updates. The motion carried by voice vote. The chair said the approved resolution must be forwarded to the Sawyer County Board for final action.
