Board gets updates on West/Highland rebuilds and temporary athletic sites; community raises access and safety concerns

Facilities director Isaac Astell said the West High utility site package mobilizes next week and reported the work is "almost 2,000,000 under what our budget was for this first portion," which he called a positive development for the program. He described ongoing coordination with UDOT and the city for driveway cutouts and traffic access, and said plans include additional mature trees and separation of faculty and student parking at Highland to limit neighborhood impacts.
Astell reviewed temporary athletic-site work at Rosewood Park, Glendale, Clayton and Dilworth, noting trade-offs and constraints. Several board members and community commenters raised concerns about Clayton: how the temporary fields would affect in-school PE classes, after-school leagues, and transportation logistics for teams and students. Astell said temporary outfields are designed to be rollable so they can be removed when needed and that construction will be timed to minimize disruption (construction slated to begin in summer and to be completed before school starts in fall). "We're putting a temporary outfield that can be rolled up and rolled out so it doesn't affect that area," he said, describing the approach.
Board members and staff discussed alternatives such as renting city or other district fields for two seasons; Astell said many city fields already have long-term commitments and off-site options would increase travel time and complexity for students. The board asked facilities to post timely online updates and to coordinate communication through principals and athletic directors so teachers and coaches receive advance notice rather than learning of changes from parents.
On open communication, officials said a centralized construction portal and principal/area-director chain will be used to capture questions and route them to Jason Olson in communications or to facilities so community members have a single point of contact. The board asked for clearer timeline postings and improved school-level outreach during the construction process.
