New Shoreham selects Grace's Cove road for FY26 DOT restoration grant and authorizes town match

Town staff and the public-works lead outlined the FY26 road-restoration program and presented recommended projects for the town’s requested DOT grant allocation. Staff said the state program funds 33% of eligible roadway work and this round allocated $83,000 to New Shoreham for the town’s selected project.
Mike Shea (public-works priorities referenced by staff) identified Grace's/Gracie's Cove Road — specifically the first 1,000 feet of the route — as the highest-priority section to submit for the program. The plan described pulverizing and regrading the roadway base, trimming and fine-grading, and placing two inches of reclaimed/recycled asphalt millings to stabilize the surface.
Staff estimated the town match at about $200,000 (figures are estimates pending final bidding). Councilors discussed traffic-speed consequences observed after smoothing roads elsewhere and asked public-works to consider temporary or seasonal speed-mitigation measures such as rubberized, removable speed bumps. Public-works staff said such measures are possible but must balance plowing and winter operations.
Council voted to authorize the 2026 road-restoration application and to provide the required local match for the Grace's Cove project. Staff cautioned that final matching figures will depend on bid results and that the town will continue to monitor DOT announcements for supplemental funding rounds.
