Rankin County on Nov. 3 acknowledged receipt of an application from Southern Environmental Group, Inc. to amend the county's Solid Waste Management Plan. The application concerns an addition to the county's Class II rubbish pit at Mount Helm.
The board authorized the county attorney and county administrator to carry out required notifications, to prepare and mail notices to adjacent property owners and adjacent counties, and to direct engineering services to prepare and issue the public notice. Staff noted the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will have its own concurrent process and that the county's action is required before implementation.
The board voted to authorize the required outreach and scheduling for a hearing; the action at this stage is procedural acknowledgement of the application and does not grant the amendment itself. Staff will set public-notice dates and the required hearing for the amendment request and report further details to the board as the county process and DEQ review proceed.
