Rankin supervisors set Dec. 1 hearing for proposed two-mill increase for Langford Fire Protection District

The Rankin County Board of Supervisors voted Nov. 3 to adopt a resolution of intent and set a public hearing for Dec. 1 on a requested two-mill increase for the Langford Fire Protection District.
County staff explained the process for notice and the statutory right that allows 20% of qualified electors within the district to file a petition to force the question to an election. Staff also explained that state law caps the levy for the district at 2 mills and that, if approved through the county process, the additional millage would not appear on tax bills until January 2027 due to timing of levy implementation.
Shane Adams, fire chief for the Langford Fire Department, outlined operational capacity and capital needs: an active volunteer force of about 30, roughly 2,400 rooftops in the district, and about 400 calls annually. He described aging apparatus and a backlog of capital needs, saying the two additional mills would generate about $70,000 and would be used primarily for capital purchases and to sustain training and vehicle upkeep. "About $70,000," Adams said when asked what two mills would generate.
Board members acknowledged the timing and statutory limits and voted to adopt the resolution of intent with publication and posting requirements for the Dec. 1 public hearing. The hearing will give the Langford Fire Protection District an opportunity to present details to residents of the district; if a valid petition signed by 20% of qualified electors is submitted before the hearing, the question could be placed on an election ballot instead of decided by the board.
