Rankin County supervisors declare flood-damaged house at 612 Williams Road condemnable

Rankin County staff and emergency responders presented photos and on-site findings Nov. 3 and the Board of Supervisors voted to declare the John Thomas and Anna Louise Hendon property at 612 Williams Road condemnable under Mississippi Code §43-35-103.
County staff opened a public hearing, noting the owners were not present, and said they were considering condemnation based on life-safety concerns. The fire coordinator told the board the house has no power or water, has flooded repeatedly and is located in a flood plain. According to the coordinator, "There is no power, and there is no water" and "There's mold everywhere," and photos shown to the board documented widespread interior damage and tarps on the roof.
Staff recommended the board declare the property condemnable, secure it to prevent entry and initiate the community-development and judicial process to require remediation. "Based on that, the staff's recommendation would be that you go ahead and take action to declare that this is a property under 43-35-103 that needs to be condemned," staff said during the hearing.
Board President moved to adopt the staff recommendation; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The board directed the fire coordinator and appropriate emergency-response and law-enforcement personnel to secure the property so it cannot be inhabited and to start the legal steps through community development to have the court determine remediation requirements.
The public hearing was closed after the vote. The action authorizes staff to pursue the statutory condemnation process; the court will make any final determination about remediation and further legal steps.
